Anup Mitra
Anup Mitra, young artist from south Kolkata, West Bengal, India. He had completed B.V A from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata in West Bengal, India. During M.F.A degree course at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan he got the opportunities to meet eminent painter and printmaker late sir K. G. Subramanyan (one of the pioneers of Indian modern Art) and some other eminent artists like Jogen Chowdhury, Ramananda Bandyopadhyay, Pinaki Barua who inspired him.
Art for him is a way of expressing his emotions...his thoughts...his conflicts...his memories…his languages...the reflection of ideas that are transformed in his mind from his interaction with sociopolitical matrix within which we are entangled.
In the paintings, the nostalgic moments of Kolkata...‘the city of joy’, his childhood emotions that were imprinted on memories have inspired him as one of his favorite subjects, the hand pulling rickshaw and the tram, very iconic identity and the oldest vehicles of the city of Kolkata in India that witness to city’s socio-economic evolution.
Through fantasy and dark imagery around the themes of Bengali folklore he tried to depict visual thoughts/the philosophy on life with simple lines, forms and colors. He used the organic and inorganic forms in his works as metaphor and tried to convey sublime messages love, awareness and portray beautiful stories.
